Jerry Springer dies, aged 79

Jerry Springer, the former mayor and news anchor who rose to fame as the host of The Jerry Springer Show, has died at the age of 79. The controversial talk show featured guests who often bared all and engaged in brawls and arguments in front of a raucous audience. Despite criticism for its salacious content, the show was a ratings hit for 27 years, with some episodes topping those of Oprah Winfrey's talk show. Springer, who described the show as "escapist entertainment," died peacefully at his home in suburban Chicago after a brief illness. He was also known for his political career and unsuccessful bid for the governorship of Ohio in 2017. Springer was born in a London underground railway station during the Holocaust and his family fled to the United States when he was five.

Jerry Springer was known for his distinctive accent and his love of music. He was a classically trained pianist and often played piano on his show, even accompanying guests who would sing or perform.

In addition to his political and broadcasting career, Springer also had a brief stint as an actor, appearing in films such as "Ringmaster" and "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."

Despite the controversy surrounding his show, Springer was widely admired for his kindness and compassion off-camera. He was an active supporter of many charitable causes, including the USO, the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and the Alzheimer's Association.

Following the end of his show, Springer hosted a courtroom show called "Judge Jerry," which premiered in 2019. He also continued to make public appearances and speak about his life and career.

Springer's death was met with an outpouring of condolences from fans and colleagues. "Jerry Springer Show" producer Richard Dominick said in a statement, "Jerry was a great friend and mentor to me, and to countless others in the entertainment industry. His impact on popular culture cannot be overstated, and his legacy will live on for generations to come."
